**Steps to add and subtract like fractions
**
Like fractions are fractions that have the same denominators.
Adding/subtracting these fractions are very similar to adding/subtracting whole numbers.
Just add/subtract the numerators together, and leave the denominators the same.
Then, check to see if you can simplify your answer.

__Example__
**ADDITION**
**Step 1**
**Add 1/4 + 1/4**
**click for answer**

**2/4 **

**Step 2: Can I simplify my answer?**
**1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4**
**click for answer**

2/4 can be simplified because both

numbers can be divided by 2

2 divided by 2 = 1

4 divided by 2 = 2

My simplified fraction is 1/2.

**SUBTRACTION**
**Step 1**
**Subtract 3/4 -1/4**
**click for answer**

**2/4 **

**Step 2: Can I simplify my answer?**
**3/4 - 1/4 = 2/4**
**click for answer**

2/4 can be simplified because both numbers can be divided by 2

2 divided by 2 = 1

4 divided by 2 = 2

My simplified fraction is 1/2.

**IMPROPER FRACTIONS**
**Step 1**
**Add 3/5 + 4/5**
**click for answer**

**7/5 **

**Step 2: Can I simplify my answer?**
**3/5 + 4/5 = 7/5**
**click for answer**

7/5 is an improper fraction; therefore it needs to be simplified.

Since 5/5 makes up one whole,

how many fifths are left? 2/5.

Answer is 1 2/5.

**Let's practice adding and **

subtracting fractions.
**1. 3/5 + 1/5**
**click for answer**

Answer: 4/5, no simplification

**2. 3/4 + 1/4**
**click for answer**

Answer: 4/4, needs simplification

This can be looked at in two ways:

In 4/4, both numbers can be divided by 4.

4 divided by 4 = 1

4 divided by 4 = 1

Therefore the answer is 1/1 = 1

**If the numerator and denominator**

are both the same, the answer

is always 1.

**Using Tiles**

3/4 is gold and 1/4 is blue,

added together equals 4/4.

4/4 shows the entire large

square shaded.

1 whole square is shaded.

Answer: 4/4 = 1

**4. 7/12 - 1/12 **
**click for answer**

Answer: 6/12 needs simplification

Can 6/12 be simplified?
**Yes**.

6 and 12 can both be divided by 6.

6/12 = 1/2
Answer: 1/2

**3. 9/10 + 3/10**
**click for answer**

Answer: 12/10 needs simplification

12 and 10 can both be divided by 2.

12/10 = 6/5

**Using Tiles**

Can 6/5 be simplified?
Yes

6/5 is an improper fraction

and must still be simplified.

6/5 = 6 pieces cut into fifths

5/5 represents one whole

rectangle shaded and 1/5 of the

second rectangle shaded.

Answer: 1 1/5.

**5. 5/9 - 2/9**
**click for answer**

Answer: 3/9, needs simplification

Can 3/9 be simplified? **Yes**

3 and 9 can both be divided by 3.

3/9 = 1/3
